Mogadishu, Somalia – The Ministry of Defence of the Federal Republic of Somalia has welcomed the publication of the United Nations Annual Report on Children and Armed Conflict (A/80/723-S/2026/357), which formally confirmed the removal of Ahl al-Sunna Waljama’a (ASWJ) from the list of parties responsible for grave violations against children in situations of armed conflict.
According to the Ministry, the decision marks a significant development in Somalia’s ongoing efforts to strengthen compliance with international humanitarian and human rights standards. ASWJ had appeared for many years in the annexes and reports of the United Nations on Children and Armed Conflict due to concerns over violations affecting children during periods of armed conflict.
The United Nations removed ASWJ from the list after confirming that the group no longer exists as an independent armed entity and that its members have been integrated into Somalia’s national security institutions.
The Ministry of Defence described the development as recognition of Somalia’s progress in security sector reforms and the consolidation of legitimate state institutions. Officials noted that the integration of former ASWJ members into national security structures has contributed to improved oversight, accountability, and adherence to national and international obligations concerning the protection of children.
The Federal Government of Somalia reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the rights and welfare of children and to working closely with international partners, including the United Nations, to prevent grave violations against children in conflict situations.
The Ministry emphasized that Somalia remains dedicated to implementing measures that strengthen child protection mechanisms within its security institutions and support lasting peace and stability across the country.
