MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somali-American politician Nadia Mohamed, the mayor of St. Louis Park, Minnesota, received a hero’s welcome upon her arrival in Mogadishu on Friday, where she was greeted by government officials, community leaders, and members of the public.
Mohamed, one of the highest-profile Somali-American elected officials in the United States, is visiting Somalia as part of an official trip aimed at strengthening ties between the country and its global diaspora.
Speaking shortly after her arrival, Mohamed expressed her excitement about returning to Somalia, describing the visit as a meaningful homecoming. She also praised the progress made in Mogadishu in recent years and emphasized the importance of continued collaboration between Somalis at home and abroad.
Mohamed made history in 2023 when she was elected mayor of St. Louis Park, becoming one of the first Somali-American women to lead a U.S. city. Her election was widely celebrated by Somali communities across the United States and internationally as a milestone for immigrant representation in public office.
Her visit comes as Somalia continues to deepen engagement with its diaspora, whose contributions through investment, humanitarian assistance, and public service play a significant role in the country’s development and reconstruction.
