Nairobi, Kenya — Democratic Change Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has sharply criticized the latest fuel price increase, accusing the government of placing an unbearable economic burden on ordinary Kenyans already struggling with the high cost of living.
Speaking during a press briefing, Gachagua condemned the recent adjustment in fuel prices, saying the move will trigger a fresh wave of inflation and push the prices of essential goods and services even higher across the country.
“The continuous increase in fuel prices is punishing hardworking Kenyans. This decision will directly affect transportation costs, food prices, electricity production, and the overall cost of doing business,” Gachagua said.
The DCP leader argued that the fuel hike comes at a time when many households are facing severe economic hardship, with rising prices of food, rent, school fees, and healthcare already stretching family budgets to the limit.
Gachagua called on the government and the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority to provide a clear explanation for the latest increase and to implement urgent measures to cushion citizens from further economic strain.
He further accused the administration of failing to prioritize economic relief for citizens, claiming that poor policy decisions and excessive taxation are worsening the financial pressure facing millions of Kenyans.
“The government must stop treating Kenyans as a source of endless taxation. Leadership is about finding solutions, not deepening the suffering of citizens,” he stated.
The former deputy president urged Parliament to intervene and review fuel taxation policies, warning that unchecked increases could cripple key sectors including transport, agriculture, manufacturing, and small-scale businesses.
Economic analysts warn that higher fuel costs often have a ripple effect across the economy, as increased transport and production expenses are usually passed on to consumers.
The press briefing comes amid growing public frustration over the rising cost of living, with many Kenyans expressing concern that continued fuel price hikes could further weaken household purchasing power and slow economic recovery.
Gachagua reaffirmed that the Democratic Change Party would continue pushing for policies aimed at reducing the tax burden and protecting vulnerable households from escalating living costs.
