The Democratic Republic of the Congo has officially declared its 17th Ebola epidemic after at least 80 deaths were reported in the eastern province of Ituri Province, raising fears of wider regional spread across Central and East Africa. Health authorities confirmed that the outbreak is linked to the rare Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus — a variant for which there is currently no approved vaccine.
According to Congo’s Ministry of Health, more than 246 suspected cases have already been recorded in affected health zones including Bunia, Mongwalu, and Rwampara. The suspected index case was a nurse who died after developing severe symptoms, including fever, vomiting, bleeding, and extreme weakness.
The outbreak has triggered international concern, with the World Health Organization declaring the situation a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) due to the high risk of cross-border transmission. Neighboring Uganda has already reported imported cases connected to the Congolese outbreak.
Health experts warn that response efforts are being severely complicated by insecurity in eastern Congo, limited medical infrastructure, shortages of protective equipment, and delayed detection. WHO officials say the epidemic may be spreading faster than current response systems can contain. Reports now indicate suspected deaths may have risen well beyond the initial 80 reported fatalities.
This marks another painful chapter for Congo, where Ebola was first identified in 1976. Authorities are urging residents to report symptoms immediately, avoid physical contact with suspected patients, and follow public health directives as emergency teams race to contain the outbreak.
