The European Union has announced a fresh round of sanctions against Sudan, targeting the country’s gold trade in an effort to cut off funding for the ongoing conflict.
In a statement released on Monday, the Council of the European Union said the new measures ban the purchase, import and transfer of gold originating from Sudan. The sanctions also prohibit the sale, supply, transfer or export of mercury and cyanide to Sudan.
According to the EU, the restrictions are aimed at disrupting financial flows that fuel the conflict while allowing exemptions for humanitarian operations, public health emergencies and disaster response efforts.
