William Ruto Announces Plans for Further Fuel Price Cuts After Protests and Transport Strike

Kenyan President William Ruto has announced plans for a further reduction in fuel prices following deadly protests and a nationwide transport strike triggered by rising fuel costs.

Speaking on Friday after a meeting with transport union leaders, Ruto said the government is working on additional measures aimed at easing the burden on citizens struggling with the rising cost of living and transport expenses.

The protests, which erupted in several parts of Kenya, were fueled by anger over high fuel prices that have sharply increased transport fares and the cost of basic goods. Demonstrators accused the government of failing to shield ordinary Kenyans from worsening economic pressure.

Public transport operators and union leaders had earlier launched a strike, warning that soaring diesel and petrol prices were making operations unsustainable. In some areas, clashes between protesters and security forces turned deadly, raising concerns over growing social and economic tensions.

President Ruto acknowledged the hardship facing many households and businesses, saying the government is exploring interventions to stabilize fuel costs while protecting the economy from external shocks.

The latest developments come amid a wider global fuel crisis linked to tensions in the Middle East, where geopolitical instability has disrupted energy markets and pushed international oil prices higher. The rising global costs have placed additional pressure on fuel-importing countries across Africa, including Kenya.

Analysts say any reduction in fuel prices could help calm public anger and lower transport and commodity costs, though concerns remain over long-term economic pressures and the country’s dependence on imported petroleum products.
