WASHINGTON — The United States has temporarily halted its air campaign against Iran, with reports suggesting that concerns over dwindling stocks of key air defence missiles played a role in President Donald Trump’s decision to pause further military escalation.
The pause follows nearly two weeks of sustained U.S. strikes targeting Iranian military infrastructure and comes as the conflict threatens to widen across the Middle East. According to U.S. media reports, senior administration officials warned that expanding the campaign could rapidly deplete supplies of Patriot interceptor missiles and other critical defensive munitions needed to protect American forces and allies in the region.
While the United States has suspended its nightly airstrikes, military operations have not stopped entirely. U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said naval forces continue to enforce a maritime blockade aimed at restricting Iran’s ability to move military supplies and maintain pressure on Tehran.
The White House has not publicly confirmed that weapons stockpiles influenced the decision. Instead, officials have said the pause is intended to create space for diplomacy and reduce the risk of a broader regional conflict. Vice President JD Vance and other senior advisers are reported to have supported giving negotiations an opportunity before authorizing additional military action.
Iran has responded by indicating that it will halt retaliatory attacks against U.S. allies as long as Washington refrains from launching new strikes. However, Iranian military leaders have warned that any resumption of American attacks would trigger a wider conflict across the Middle East.
The conflict has already spread beyond Iran’s borders, with Iran-backed Houthi fighters in Yemen launching attacks on Saudi oil infrastructure and renewed tensions emerging across key maritime routes, including the Red Sea and the Strait of Hormuz. The escalation has heightened concerns over global energy supplies and pushed oil prices higher.
Military analysts note that modern missile defence systems rely on sophisticated interceptors that are costly, complex and difficult to replace quickly. As a result, commanders must balance the demands of ongoing operations with the need to preserve strategic reserves for potential future conflicts.
Although the current pause has eased immediate fears of a broader U.S.-Iran confrontation, uncertainty remains high. Diplomatic efforts are continuing, but both Washington and Tehran have signaled that they are prepared to resume military action if negotiations fail or either side perceives a new threat.
